Facts that we need to know about low self-esteem

In case you have been told that you either suffer from the so-called low self-esteem or you are involved in the treatment of a person that has low self-esteem, then there are some really interesting facts that you should know about. This is because you can actually find myths about the self-esteem of a person that can not only prevent you from taking care of your low self-esteem, but even help to further break it down. The condition where a person has low self-esteem is one that has been studied scientifically. In the results of all these studies there are findings that will be part of the facts that you are going to read about very soon.

1. Low self-esteem is something that we shouldn’t blame for being a bad person. First of all, the people that have truly low self-esteem, low confidence and an image of themselves which is poor, really often get lumped together with child abusers, criminals, narcissists and bullies and this most certainly shouldn’t be the case. The assumption that is most popular is that if someone has low self-esteem then they will do bad things to others in order to make themselves feel either better or at least levelled with their victim. The researches on low self-esteem have proven that people that suffer from this condition tend to treat badly not the people around them, but themselves. Back in the 80’s there was a movement that promoted raising the level of self-esteem in the public schools, hoping that this may lead to reduction in the number of bullies in these schools. Of course, this didn’t lead to much as bullies don’t go around bullying people due to their low self-esteem.

In the end, low self-esteem shouldn’t be blamed for all the things that are connected to it because of the countless myths. It surely leads to problems, but they aren’t as many as we originally thought. Also, the assumption that high self-esteem is another problem has appeared.

2. Low self-esteem in its genuine form has the following characteristics:

– Withdrawal from the society;

– Emotional turmoil and anxiety;

– Lack of self-confidence and social skills. Bouts of sadness and/or depression;

– Eating disorders;

– Your inability to be complemented;

– Inability to be fair with yourself;

– Accentuation on the negative sides of things;

– Self neglect;

– Little expectations for life and yourself.

3. High self-esteem may be related to criminality. The high self-esteem disorder or simply high self-esteem is a problem that gets more and more common. However, there is a pretty common myth that high self-esteem in fact is low self-esteem in a disguise. Of course, this is not true and in case you are being bullied, you shouldn’t feel sorry for them as they most certainly don’t suffer from low self-esteem (we Danes call it lavt selvværd behandling ). Numerous researches have proven that criminals and bullies actually have pretty unreal self-esteem and problems connected with the control of their impulses rather than having low self-esteem.
