Sometimes it is really difficult for a person to admit he/she is under stress just because he/she doesn’t know the stress symptoms. In this regard, stress is pretty much the same as alcoholic intoxication. For a drunken person, it is close to impossible to admit he/she is really drunk, but the state and the symptoms are much more obvious to other people. Just like it is with alcoholic intoxication, some people can handle a stress situation more than perfectly, while others may require professional help. But the first thing for a person to do in both situations is to admit that he/she is in trouble.
It can be really difficult to identify the stress symptoms, however, it is essential to understand that the sooner you will realize you are under stress, the easier it will be for you to overcome it. As long as chronic stress can lead to such serious consequences as insomnia, high blood pressure, heart diseases, severe headaches, and even apoplexy, you may want to diagnose it at the earliest stages.
Different stress symptoms can be categorized as psychological, emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms. Often enough people confuse emotional and psychological symptoms, especially when they do not have enough knowledge of psychology. But it does not really matter whether you have identified an emotional or psychological symptom of stress in you or in your friend. It is much more important to make sure that you will get professional help, and it will be possible for you to cure this disease.
Emotional stress symptoms may not be so obvious to you, but it should be much easier for your friends or family members to identify these symptoms in you. A person under stress usually shows such symptoms as high irritability, hostility, anxiety, poor judgment, frequent mood swings, and so on.
Mental or psychological symptoms of stress can include low self-esteem, negative self-perception, fuzzy thinking, and many others. Note that as far as a person under stress is easily irritated, he or she can also be aggressive to other people. Moreover, a person can claim he or she has the symptoms of physical or mental illnesses he/she does not have in fact. This is one of the most common manifestations of mental symptoms of stress.
If you are under stress, you should easily notice such physical symptoms as fatigue, loss of appetite, insomnia, headache, stomach illnesses, constipation or diarrhea, low or high blood pressure, sweaty palms and other problems with skin and hair.
Last but not least, a person under stress may have behavioral symptoms. Behavioral symptoms of stress (or stress symptomer as we say in Denmark) are even less obvious for a person under stress than emotional symptoms of stress. However, they indicate that this person suffers from the most severe forms of stress, and they can be easily noticed by anyone who is close to you. If you have never drunk alcohol before, your family members will surely notice it. And if there is a serious conflict between you and your family, friends, or co-workers, then it is time for you to call for professional help.
