MANHATTAN & NEW YORK CITY, NY – Many claim that SmartLipo is an effective alternative to a tummy tuck, but that may not be true for everyone.
What is SmartLipo?
SmartLipo is the gold standard of laser liposuction. Since its approval by the Food and Drug Administration in 2006, it’s been making waves and gaining praise for its results.
An improvement upon liposuction of the past, which worsens loose skin, SmartLipo can actually tighten it. The laser ruptures fat cells so it can be gently suctioned away with specialized cannulas, which are smaller than traditional varieties requiring only a pen-sized incision for insertion. The procedure also induces collagen production and coagulation, which tightens the skin.
SmartLipo has several benefits that seem more alluring than a tummy tuck for patients with excess fat and skin in their abdominal area. A tiny incision and local anesthesia sounds much better than a hip-to-hip scar and being put “under. ” The reduced downtime associated with SmartLipo also makes it a no-brainer for those short on time – at least at first glance.
“There is no denying that SmartLipo has great qualities, but it isn’t for everyone, ” says Dr. Andrew Miller. “Depending on the severity of the case, laser liposuction may not yield satisfactory results. And most patients will opt for the procedure that achieves the best results without concern for downtime. “
Patients Get What They Pay For.
With plastic surgery, patients get what they pay for, says Dr. Miller, a mini-facelift and rhinoplasty Manhattan specialist. The previous statement is not necessarily referring to the price of surgery, but its qualities. Less invasive procedures often yield less dramatic results, which is fine if the patient only requires minor improvement. But if their case is more severe or complicated, they will surely be disappointed with their results and investment.
Is SmartLipo the Right Choice?
The ideal candidate for SmartLipo has excess stomach fat, skin that is either minimally lax and/or undamaged abdominal muscles. Although SmartLipo can tighten skin, if the skin is extremely lax, there is a lot of excess fat and/or the abdominal muscles are damaged, its effects won’t be enough to make the patient happy.
Tummy Tuck
For those who require more improvement than a NYC laser liposuction can produce, a tummy tuck is the way to go. Although a tummy tuck does leave a scar, it allows the surgeon to not only remove excess fat, but large amounts of excess skin as well.
“With a tummy tuck, we can also go in and repair damaged abdominal muscles, ” says Miller.
While this incision can run from hip to hip, it is hidden below the bikini line and beats having loose skin and fat sagging over a bikini bottom at the beach.
Tummy tucks can be performed as outpatient procedures, require general anesthesia (some surgeons may use local anesthesia with a sedative) and one to two weeks of downtime. Aftercare includes wearing comprehension garment and drainage tubes to aide in swift, successful healing.
“Neither procedure replaces a healthy diet and exercise, ” says Miller, a New York City tummy tuck and SmartLipo pro. “Patients should be in good shape prior to these procedures and ideally, not plan to become pregnant. “
